Until 4 years ago I thought running was for people shaped like pipecleaners with an unhealthy desire to be cold. At least that's what childhood cross-country taught me...
I stumbled into a love for running by accident in 2014. As my three kids were starting to grow up, I had rediscovered my teenage enjoyment for cycling. I was chatting to the chap in the bike shop who suggested that a *tiny* bit of running may help my cardio, and thus my ability to ride up hills. My first ‘run’ was 2k and my knees were sore for 3 days. But something felt good and I wondered if the next one would be a bit better and a bit easier… and before I knew it I’d run my first 5k, 10k, and 3 months later my first half marathon. I was hooked.
Four years later and I’ve run a few marathons, a few ultras, trails, up mountains, along beaches, road races, 24 hour relays, 50 parkruns… I’ve run in -20 to +35 degrees. I’ve run in Red Square and in the Serengeti… and even rediscovered that cross country CAN be fun! I take my trainers wherever my busy day-job takes me and I’m grateful for some of the amazing places I’ve experienced that you can only get to on two feet with a bit of effort and sweat. Running is good for the mind and the body – I run to de-stress, to stay happy, to achieve, to test my limits, and to share those experiences with others.
Harpenden Arrows is a key part of my running journey and the support, advice, and company got me through my first marathon in 2015. I love the variety the club brings from formal to informal events. Recently I found myself having a few thoughts about how I could give something back in return for what the club has given me.
I’m delighted to be elected on the committee, and I look forward to helping others discover, continue to enjoy, and achieve in the glorious sport of running.
