Monthly 5k Handicap
On the third Tuesday of the month (unless notified otherwise) we run a 5k handicap race. Its a lot of fun and because we start the slower runners off first the quick people have to work extra hard if they want to win. We meet at the club as normal but try to be a few minutes early so that we can work out your start time etc.
After the race we either have tea and cake or occasionally head down to the Engineer pub for a bite to eat and a well-earned drink. (You can come for/with cake/pub if you didn't run too.)
You can shower at St Georges if you wish.
We run on the Winter circuit from Sep onwards. Please wear high viz clothing. If you can't run please come along and help with the marshalling.

12th December 2023
It was a slighly damp evening and we had a total of 8 runners tonight. There were also a few roadwork hazards scattered around the course for runners to negotiate. Tonight's winner was Tessa Whitmore - congratulations!. Tessa and Mark Pattison managed to achieve personal best times - well done.
This was the last 5K handicap of this year. A big thanks to everyone who volunteered tonight or at any of the previous races. We will see you all at the next one in Jan 2024!

21st November 2023
12 runners braved the winter course on a dark evening with a chill in the air. We welcomed three first-timers and recorded no PB's this time, which was unsurprising with two sets of road works and slippery leaves everywhere on the course.
SOME STATISTICS / FUN FACTS
- As per the norm, positions 1 and 2 were first-timers to the 5k.
- Top 3: 1 Sharon Neely, 2 Charlotte Acton & 3 Lynne Miles.
- No PBs, though Lynne was very close with a time that was merely three seconds off her PB. Douglas Cameron was also very close to his PB (five seconds).
- The raffle went to Steve Green. Our kit secretary will give you your club kit voucher.
- Kudos to Tessa Whitmore, for persistence and perseverance, after venturing off course via Crabtree(?). Managed to find her way back and carried on with her race. I'm curious about the distance run and how fast you would have been had a turn not been missed.
THANK YOU
Well done to all runners and a huge thanks to the marshalls and caterers for another fantastic Club 5k and cake night. See you in a month's time for the next one.
Thanks to: Mark Pattison, Doug Walmsley, Peter Thornton, Anita White, Taras Huzar, Ed Rhodes, Helen Harper, Claire Watts, Christine Ferguson. (Apologies if I left anyone out, please message me and I'll add you to the spreadsheet.)
SAFETY
Last night, most runners did not have head torches or lights with them, the 5k winter course has a particularly dark stretch along Carlton Road (the section between Stewart Road and Sun Lane). Please consider bringing a light along next time, it helps to be seen, but also helps you to see.

It was a mild and dry night tonight - ideal running conditions. For the first time in many months, we had no first-timers and no PBs. Well done to Graham Harper who came in first - a solid win! Great effort from Simon Speirs in second place and James Blackburn in third.
After the race, we adjourned to St Georges for some delicious cake and tea/coffee and a good chat.
Some of us then moved on to The Inn On The Green to congratulate Audrey Zilliox Herrbach on her great effort in the Triathlon World Championships. Nice medal too Audrey!
THANK YOU
Well done to all the volunteers and cake providers. It was another well-organised club 5k!

This evening we had eight runners, including two first-timers, vying for position on the last run on the summer course on the Nickey Line.
First-timer Andrew Livesey came first, closely followed by Jo Davies who was also a first-timer (if you discount her last 5k Handicap about 10 years ago!). Chris Zhou came in third place.
THANK YOU
Thanks to all runners and Ed Rhodes, Ben Cullis, Doug Walmsley and Djerk Geurts for volunteering this evening!
We hope to see you all in September for next month's 5k Handicap race on the winter course.

STATISTICS / FUN FACTS
- Welcome to three first-timers! We hope you enjoyed it and will be back with us next month.

- Doug Walmsley sharpened his PB by 1 minute and 23 seconds.

Fourteen runners enjoyed perfect running conditions on the summer course. We welcomed two first-timers and recorded a whopping five PBs!
SOME STATISTICS / FUN FACTS
-
Apparently, according to James Blackburn, Adrian Cloake is planning to run the club 5k in the year 20234. This is an impressive goal, but who am I to judge? Kudos to the timers for managing to 'blindly' send him off within 15 seconds of his official handicap time.
-
Positions 1 and 4 are the two first-timers. Welcome to the Arrows, we hope you had a great run and social afterwards.
-
Top 3: 1 Rosie Comboni, 2 Steve Green & 3 Beatrice Merrick.
-
Five PBs: Steve Green, Beatrice Merrick, Tom Honnywill, Nick Semple & Chris Zhou.
-
Both Steve and Beatrice improved their PBs by more than a minute!
-
Some might not run a 5k race two days after completing a marathon but will scale stairs for cake.
THANK YOU
Well done to all runners and a huge thanks to the marshalls and caterers for another fantastic Club 5k and cake night. See you in a month's time for the next one.
VOLUNTEERS
Thanks also to James Blackburn who operated the spreadsheet, after 'volunteering' last month. You're a good sport and did a great job, bar one date... You gave it a shot and had fun doing it, so what about next month?
28th March 2023
SOME STATISTICS
-
First-timers Hannah Gomes and Stephen Green took positions two and three.
-
But Andrew Bracey took the win by shaving a massive 1:46 off his PB.
-
And lastly a special shout out to James Blackburn who despite complaining about missing his usual warm-up, needing the extra miles for his marathon training and about the time it took to post these results. In order to resolve the issue he kindly volunteered to operate the spreadsheet and compile plus post the results for the next club 5k.
THANK YOU
28th February 2023
We also had four PBs and Wyn Walker knocked nearly a minute off his previous best time. Well done to all runners and commiserations to Doug Walmsley who took a wrong turn, unfortunately.
17th January 2023
SOME STATISTICS
-
Positions 1 to 3 were PBs. Well done Audrey Zilliox Herrbach, Wyn Walker & Martin Petersen!
-
No injuries (AFAIK!)
-
All marshalls survived the cold, phew!
-
Nick Semple and Muiris O'Connell both managed to run a 20-minute 5k despite the ice. I'm not sure whether to say well done, or tell you off for dangerous running?!
